Why girls do make up? For themselves or for her circle?

What is the underlying motivation in doing make-up? When I asked my girlfriend about it, she replied she was doing it for herself. What the hell does this mean? It sounds to me the biggest lie that one makes himself believe for a long while. If it is the extra confidence you get with make-up, isn`t that serving the purpose of attracting attention from surrounding and fostering your ego like all our other actions is serving.

My objection is about the statement that one does the things for himself. How come ? If you were living in this world alone, would you still be doing your make-up after sufficient time has passed until you break the habit? How much are we really independent from our environment although we want to believe that we are completely independent? When we say, we do all the things making us beautiful or more intelligent or richer (developing mental skills, fit body muscles, make-up, nice hair, dress) for ourselves, to what extent we really mean it?

Let`s think of this extreme case. If nobody else than you were alive today, who would bother doing make-up before going out or who would bother writing songs? Aren`t most of the actions we do are fostered by our motivation to get as much attention as we can get? Then doesn`t this statement of ';doing things for himself'; contain some kind of lack of self confidence which makes you make up a lie and start believing you are independent and strong as you might actually not believe it by yourself.

What do you think? Have you ever seen an animal doing make up or playing music or training to have solely some beatiful muscles? These activities do not stem from nature. These must be rather the instruments society has invented for some purpose right?

My opinion is that, we do these to get others` attention and indirectly foster the ego. (So in a sense, indir茅ctly for ourselves in the long run but the idea that one does it solely for himself as if he would do the same if he were alone in this world, just makes me question the real motivation of the person. Maybe he needs to make himself believe he is able to be strong alone because of many undesired incidents happened to him before.

Please share your insights about this topicWhy girls do make up? For themselves or for her circle?
Some of this is true; when I asked myself whether I would do make-up or really care about how my body looked if i was the only person alive, then no I wouldn't.

The one thing I would work on however, was my 'mental skills', as this seems to be the only thing one can truly do for themselves. I really don't think this aspect of humanity (mostly) is to boost someones ego. Its to promote understanding of the world, and spark interest in topics.

Putting all that aside, there is a type of confidence gained from putting make-up on and feeling beautiful, but this is only gained when others are around. So yes, not all people do their make-up for themselves, but some do. I do my make-up so people will thinkI'm pretty and I can get a good kick out of this confidence boost. It's not about looking good for people- its about, yes, the ego trip we get when they do think we look good.

So I wouldn't do my make-up if noone was around, because noone would appreciate it and it wouldnt give me the same feeling. And its true that humanity mostly does things that will make them feel good about themselves- and this feeling is exemplified many times when someone else realises this accomplishment too.

So I guess a lot of things I wouldnt bother about if I was alone in the world, but things would be a lot different if that did happenWhy girls do make up? For themselves or for her circle?
Personally, I wear makeup because it makes me more attractive and I therefore have more confidence. It's not about attracting attention, it's about repelling negative attention. For me, at least.

Women are quite different from men. But there are also a lot of men who take care of their appearance. Some feel they should wear expensive brand-name clothing, some feel they need to shave everyday, get haircuts every month, wear cologne etc.

If I was the only person on the planet, no, I would not care what I looked like. It definately has to do with how others perceive me.
